62 Ghanaians Dead, 15 Missing in Russia-Ukraine War | Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that 62 Ghanaians have died in Russia, while 15 others remain missing amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The Minister disclosed this during a press conference in Moscow following bilateral discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He said the safety of Ghanaian nationals caught up in the conflict was a major issue raised during the engagement.

According to Mr Ablakwa, Ghana is particularly concerned about the alleged illegal recruitment of young Ghanaians who are lured to Russia with promises of employment but later find themselves enlisted to participate in military operations linked to the war.
He said the growing number of Ghanaian casualties was deeply concerning and stressed the need for urgent measures to prevent further recruitment and enlistment of Ghanaian youth.

Mr Ablakwa welcomed a commitment from the Russian government to work with Ghana to stop the illegal recruitment and enlistment of Ghanaian nationals into military operations.

He said the Ghanaian government would continue engaging Russian authorities and advocating for stronger measures to protect Ghanaian citizens from being deceived into travelling to Russia for jobs only to become involved in the conflict.

The Minister emphasised that Ghana has no role in the Russia-Ukraine war and should not continue to lose its citizens as a result of the conflict. The disclosure comes amid growing concerns over reports of Ghanaian nationals being recruited by agents under the guise of securing employment opportunities in Russia.

The government is expected to intensify discussions with Russian authorities to address the recruitment of Ghanaian youth and seek information on those still missing.
Mr Ablakwa reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaian nationals and preventing further loss of life in a conflict that does not involve Ghana directly.
