Brussels Airlines has launched African-inspired inflight meal options on its long-haul services from sub-Saharan Africa to Brussels, enhancing the onboard experience and reinforcing its position as the Lufthansa Group’s Africa specialist.

This forms part of the airline’s effort to enhance passenger experience and reflect the cultural diversity of its network.

The airline, regarded as the Africa specialist within the Lufthansa Group, serves 18 destinations across sub-Saharan Africa. The new culinary offering is designed to make passengers feel more at home by showcasing regional flavours, ingredients, and cooking traditions adapted for in-flight service.

Under the initiative, passengers travelling from African destinations will be served rotating menus inspired by local cuisines. The first dishes introduced include Cape Malay braised chicken with cashew nuts, mango, and coriander for Business Class passengers, and Cod Mbongo, a traditional Cameroonian dish, for Economy Class travellers. These meals will be offered alongside Brussels Airlines’ existing in-flight menu.

According to the airline, the rotating menu concept allows it to celebrate Africa’s rich culinary heritage while ensuring variety for frequent travellers. The meals are developed to balance authenticity with operational requirements for onboard catering.

“At Brussels Airlines, we aim to offer a product that we call ‘a boutique hotel in the air.’ That means a tailor-made product that makes everyone feel at home,” Philip Mortier, Inflight Product Manager at Brussels Airlines. “Offering meals inspired by the rich cuisine of the African continent reinforces that promise even further. Whether passengers want a final taste of home, to extend the feeling of their vacation, or to discover new flavours, we are confident these African-inspired meals will be appreciated.”

The introduction of African-inspired cuisine forms part of a wider investment programme by Brussels Airlines aimed at upgrading its onboard and ground product. Recently, the airline revamped its onboard dining service with new tableware and updated service procedures. On flights departing from Brussels, Business Class passengers are currently served menus curated by Belgian star chef Glenn Verhasselt.

Looking ahead, Brussels Airlines has also confirmed plans to open a new premium lounge at Brussels Airport in Summer 2026, further strengthening its offering for long-haul and premium travellers.

The airline’s latest initiative underscores its long-standing focus on Africa and its strategy to differentiate its long-haul product through culturally relevant passenger experiences.
