Heritage Fund rises to US$1.46bn | Ghana’s Heritage Fund rose to US$1.46 billion by the end of June 2026, compared with US$1.38 billion at the start of the year.
The Bank of Ghana disclosed the figures in its First Half‑Year Report on the Ghana Petroleum Funds, noting that the increase was driven by petroleum revenue allocations and investment income.
The report showed that the Fund received US$59.14 million from crude oil revenue allocations and earned US$25.14 million in investment income during the period.
The Ghana Heritage Fund was established under the Petroleum Revenue Management Act, 2011 (Act 815), to save a portion of oil revenues for future generations after petroleum resources have been depleted.
Unlike the Ghana Stabilisation Fund, which cushions the economy against revenue shortfalls, the Heritage Fund serves as a long‑term savings mechanism.
Civil society groups, including the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) and the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), have urged caution in any move to alter the Fund’s mandate, stressing that its original purpose should be preserved for future generations.
Advocates of reform argue that part of the savings could be invested in strategic national projects to generate higher returns and support economic transformation, particularly in the energy sector.
