Africa World Airlines (AWA) is preparing to launch flights between Accra and Abidjan at the end of August 2026, adding a new layer of competition to one of West Africa’s important regional air corridors.
The planned service will place AWA alongside existing operators on the route, including Air Côte d’Ivoire and ASKY, while Emirates also serves the market through fifth-freedom traffic rights from Accra.
Sohail Mahmood, Chief Operating Officer of Africa World Airlines, in an interview with Aviation Ghana, noted that “the Abidjan flight is going to start with a frequency of 4x per week, and as the load factor increases and demand rises, and as our partnership with Etihad becomes fully fledged, we will go daily.”
For passengers, the arrival of another Ghanaian carrier on the route could increase seat availability and give travellers greater choice in schedules and fares.
The Accra-Abidjan market is strategically important because of the strong commercial, diplomatic and social links between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
AWA’s entry would challenge carriers that have already established networks around the route and could force airlines to compete more aggressively on pricing, frequencies, departure times, and customer service.
The impact may extend beyond point-to-point passengers. Additional capacity between the two capitals could strengthen connections for business travellers and support movement within the wider West African market.
