Ghana Gov’t Urges Domestic Airlines to Cut Airfares | By David Kwakutse
The government is expecting domestic airlines to review airfares downwards as they begin to benefit from the removal of duties and taxes on imported aircraft spare parts, Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has said.
The policy is intended to lower operating costs for local carriers, but its impact on passengers is likely to depend on how quickly the tax savings feed through into airlines’ actual cost base.
Ghana’s domestic market remains dominated by Africa World Airlines (AWA) and PassionAir, while available seat capacity has remained a constraint on pricing.
Mr Nikpe urged the operators, particularly AWA, to reflect the savings in ticket prices and give passengers a direct benefit from the government’s intervention.
“Considering the recent announcement by His Excellency the President that all the duties on parts of domestic airlines will now be waived, we want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the airlines, especially the leading domestic airlines, Africa World Airlines, to also look at their affairs and also let it reflect on the Ghanaian travellers in their business sector, so that our people can also enjoy some reduction in airfares,” he said.
The two major domestic operators had already stockpiled spare parts for maintenance requirements through the remainder of 2026, meaning much of their near-term inventory was acquired under the old tax regime.
That creates a lag between the policy announcement and its potential effect on ticket prices. The immediate benefit may instead emerge through improved airline cash flow and greater ability to maintain aircraft, restore capacity and add frequencies.
Over a longer horizon, those savings could become more relevant to passengers. Greater capacity and stronger competition are likely to exert more pressure on fares than the tax exemption alone. More aircraft and additional operators would give travellers greater choice while increasing the number of seats competing for passengers.
