Ashanti Region to Get New Passport Application Centre| By Dominick Andoh
Mampong in the Ashanti Region is set to get a new Passport Application Centre by the first quarter of 2027, giving residents another location to access passport services and reducing pressure on the existing facility in Kumasi.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the plan in an X post following a working visit to the Kumasi Passport Application Centre, where he assessed the impact of government’s passport reforms and engaged staff and applicants on service delivery.
The Minister said a facility had already been secured in Mampong, with equipping expected to begin in the coming weeks ahead of the planned opening.
The new centre is intended to bring passport services closer to residents of Mampong and surrounding communities, reducing the need for some applicants to travel to Kumasi to complete their applications.
Mr Ablakwa said the expansion was justified by the Ashanti Region’s population and the need to distribute passport services more equitably across the country.
“The Greater Accra Region has three PACs and there’s certainly policy justification for an additional PAC in the second most populous region,” he said.
The Minister identified three principal benefits of the proposed centre: easing pressure on staff at the Kumasi facility, improving convenience for applicants and creating jobs in the region.
The Mampong project forms part of wider efforts by the Foreign Affairs Ministry to improve passport administration. Mr Ablakwa said the government was also providing vehicles and new equipment and refurbishing existing passport application centres across the country.
He said recent reforms included a 30% reduction in passport application fees, free and fast delivery, the introduction of an electronic tracking system and the establishment of passport application centres in all 16 regions.
The planned Mampong facility would add capacity to the Ashanti Region’s passport service network as the Ministry seeks to improve accessibility and efficiency.
