Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has honoured the founder of ASKY Airlines and Ecobank, Mr Gervais Koffi Gbondjide Djondo, for his pioneering contributions to African aviation and banking, recognising a career that has reshaped two of the continent’s most strategic sectors.

The honor was conferred in Accra at the Africa Trade Awards, which concluded last week and drew policymakers, business leaders, and industry stakeholders from across the continent.

The recognition celebrated the entrepreneur’s foundational role in establishing ASKY Airlines, which has grown into one of West and Central Africa’s most important carriers, and his earlier achievement in co-founding Ecobank, now one of Africa’s largest pan-African banking groups.

Together, the two institutions have played a critical role in improving connectivity, trade facilitation, and financial inclusion across multiple African markets.

In her remarks, the Vice President described the honour as a tribute to visionary African entrepreneurship, noting that the award marked the pinnacle of a lifetime of achievement that continues to influence economic integration on the continent.

She highlighted how ASKY Airlines has helped bridge African capitals, reduce travel barriers within the sub-region, and support the movement of people, goods, and investment, in line with Africa’s broader integration agenda.

ASKY Airlines, headquartered in Lomé and with strong operational links to Ghana, has built a dense intra-African network connecting dozens of cities in West and Central Africa. The airline has been widely cited for demonstrating that African-owned carriers can be commercially viable, professionally managed, and strategically relevant in a highly competitive global industry. ASKY has played a key role in strengthening regional air connectivity and supporting trade, tourism, and business mobility.

The Vice President also underscored the founder’s legacy in banking through Ecobank, which pioneered a truly Pan-African banking model. By establishing a financial institution with a presence across multiple African countries, Ecobank helped transform access to cross-border banking services and supported the growth of African enterprises operating beyond national boundaries.

The honour at the Africa Trade Summit reflects growing recognition of the interconnected nature of aviation, finance and trade in Africa’s development trajectory. By building institutions that move people and capital efficiently across borders, the Vice President said, the celebrated entrepreneur has left an enduring imprint on Africa’s economic architecture.

The award ceremony in Accra closed the summit on a high note, reinforcing Ghana’s position as a convening hub for continental dialogue on trade, investment, and infrastructure-driven growth.
