Ghana is set to deploy a new digital platform that will integrate vehicle records across multiple government and international agencies in a major effort to prevent the importation, registration and circulation of stolen vehicles.
The Vehicle Dealer Information System (VEDIS), to be introduced by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), will connect databases maintained by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Interpol, National Security, insurance providers and the GSA, enabling real-time verification of vehicle information.
The initiative forms part of broader reforms accompanying the implementation of the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme, which comes into force on October 1, 2026.
According to the GSA, the integrated platform will allow authorities to instantly verify a vehicle’s identity, ownership history and compliance status before it is registered or allowed onto Ghana’s roads.
Deputy Director-General for General Services at the GSA, Samuel Abdulai Jabanyite, said VEDIS will significantly strengthen collaboration among state institutions by allowing their systems to communicate seamlessly.
“What it simply means is that we are going to let systems speak with one another. DVLA has its data, GSA has its standards, Insurance has its data, Interpol has its data and National Security has its data. VEDIS is going to build a network that will connect all these systems and be able to provide information to the user in real-time situations,” he explained.
He added that once operational, the system will help ensure that stolen vehicles are identified before entering the country while allowing only roadworthy vehicles that comply with Ghana’s standards to be imported and registered.
Beyond tackling vehicle theft, the GSA expects the digital integration to improve transparency in Ghana’s automotive sector, enhance consumer confidence and strengthen the country’s vehicle registration and regulatory framework through real-time information sharing among key enforcement agencies.
