The Government of Ghana has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Mexico following escalating security concerns linked to recent cartel-related violence in several regions of the country.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ghana) in Accra, authorities advised Ghanaian nationals either travelling to or residing in affected areas to exercise extreme caution and closely monitor developments.

The advisory follows a major security operation by Mexican forces on February 22, 2026, which resulted in the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

According to the statement, the aftermath of the operation has triggered coordinated retaliatory attacks across multiple states, including Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Oaxaca.

The unrest has been characterised by armed clashes, vehicle arson, road blockades and disruptions to normal economic and social activities, resulting in casualties and heightened public safety risks.

The Ministry encouraged Ghanaian citizens within Mexico to maintain regular communication with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., which is currently accredited to Mexico, for consular assistance if required. A dedicated emergency hotline has also been provided to support nationals who may need urgent assistance.

Ghana’s government further expressed solidarity with Mexican authorities and conveyed confidence in their capacity to restore stability and public order in the affected regions.

Travel advisories are issued as precautionary measures to safeguard citizens abroad, particularly during periods of heightened security threats.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to protecting Ghanaian nationals globally and advised travellers to remain vigilant, follow guidance from local authorities, and avoid high-risk areas until conditions improve.
