GRIDCo Explains Second Nationwide Power Outage in Three Weeks | The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed Thursday morning’s widespread power outage to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, resulting in a significant disturbance to Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System. The development caused power supply interruptions in several parts of the country.
According to GRIDCo, the fault triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants. The company explained that the automatic shutdown was part of the system’s protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the stability and integrity of the national power network.
GRIDCo said its engineers immediately began efforts to isolate the affected transmission line and restore the power system. The restoration exercise was being undertaken in coordination with other agencies within the power sector.
The company indicated that electricity had already been restored to some affected areas, while work continued to reconnect customers who remained without power. Technical teams had been fully mobilised to ensure that the restoration was completed as quickly and safely as possible.
The latest disruption is the second major nationwide power outage in three weeks. On July 29, 2026, several parts of Ghana also experienced widespread power interruptions following a disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The recurrence of the outages has raised concerns among electricity consumers, particularly households and businesses that depend on reliable power supply for their daily activities.
GRIDCo apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused by Thursday’s interruption and assured affected customers that restoration efforts were being pursued with urgency.
The company also said it would continue to provide updates as more information became available, while appealing to the public for patience, understanding and cooperation during the restoration process.
