Africa World Airlines (AWA), one of Ghana’s two domestic airline operators, is set to take delivery of a new Embraer E190 aircraft on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in a move expected to increase seat availability in a market constrained by limited domestic capacity.
The additional aircraft comes as Ghana’s domestic aviation market continues to contend with a shortage of available seats, a constraint that has contributed to relatively high airfares on domestic routes.
AWA’s fleet expansion is therefore expected to provide some relief for passengers by increasing the number of seats available for travel and giving the airline additional capacity to serve demand across the domestic network.
The airline is taking delivery of its first Embraer jets through its shareholder, HNA Aviation. The domestic and regional operator plans to aims operate a total of 10 Embraer E190s planes by 2028.
Ghana currently has only two domestic airline operators, limiting competition and the amount of capacity available to passengers. With demand for domestic air travel exceeding available seats on some services, additional aircraft are seen as important to improving market capacity and potentially easing fare pressures.
The arrival of the new E190 could also strengthen AWA’s ability to respond to growing demand while supporting the broader development of Ghana’s domestic aviation market.
The E190 has about 100 seats, which is twice as many as the available seats on AWA’s 50-seater ERJ-145 jets.
For travellers, the immediate significance of the aircraft is more seats, which could mean greater availability, particularly during periods of strong demand, especially on weekends, holidays, and the Christmas season.
