Transport Minister Confirms Progress on Keta Port and Ho Airport | Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister for Transport, has assured residents of the Volta Region that government is making steady progress on the Keta Port project and the revitalisation of the Ho Airport. He emphasised that these initiatives aim to position the region as a major transport, logistics, and tourism hub.
Speaking at President John Dramani Mahama’s Citizens’ Engagement in Ho, Mr Nikpe confirmed that all preparatory processes for the Keta Port had been completed. He explained that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment and granted an environmental permit in April, validating the project’s viability. “The proposed Keta Port is environmentally viable and capable of serving maritime trade along the West African coast,” he said.
Construction of the administrative and operational block has already reached 80 percent completion and is expected to finish by January 2027. Mr Nikpe added that the government is engaging private investors under public‑private partnership arrangements to finance and construct the port. He expressed confidence that President Mahama’s track record in attracting strategic investors, including the successful transformation of Tema Port, would ensure the success of Keta Port.
The proposed facility will feature modern container and cargo terminals, a shipyard for vessel repairs, and road infrastructure linking the port to the national network. These additions, he noted, will facilitate efficient movement of goods and people across Ghana and the sub‑region.
Turning to aviation, Mr Nikpe announced that government has begun restoring the Ho Airport. Electricity supply has already been restored through a new transformer installed with support from the Volta Regional Coordinating Council. He revealed plans to transform the airport into a multi‑purpose aviation hub, including an Aviation Academy to train pilots, engineers, and technicians. Discussions are ongoing with a strategic investor from the Volta Region to partner the Ghana Airports Company Limited in establishing the academy.
The airport will also host aircraft hangars, a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Centre, and an air taxi service to provide charter flights nationwide and to neighbouring states.
On inland water transport, Mr Nikpe highlighted the government’s intensified efforts to improve safety on the Volta Lake. A new Transport Safety Office has been established at Kpando Torkor, staffed by trained personnel to monitor vessel operations. A dedicated search‑and‑rescue vessel has also been stationed there to respond to emergencies.
He further announced that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has expanded its services by opening a new office at Vakpo and will soon begin construction of a modern office at Hohoe.
Mr Nikpe reaffirmed government’s commitment to investing in transport infrastructure, stressing that improved mobility will facilitate trade, create jobs, and attract private sector participation.
