Air India Group Deploys SITA Digital Tools to Cut Emissions and Boost Efficiency

Air India Group Deploys SITA Digital Tools to Cut Emissions and Boost Efficiency | Air India Group has taken a major step toward sustainability by adopting SITA’s OptiFlight® and eWAS solutions across its fleet.

The two data-driven technologies, OptiClimb and eWAS, are designed to improve flight efficiency, cut fuel consumption, and reduce environmental impact. They are now active across the airline’s Airbus A320 and Air India Express Boeing 737 fleets, covering both domestic and international routes. Deployment on Air India’s widebody fleet is scheduled to follow.

According to SITA, the rollout will help Air India reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 35,000 tons annually, aligning with the airline’s broader modernisation and sustainability strategy.

“As the aviation industry navigates growing regulatory and environmental pressure, the need for intelligent, predictive solutions has never been more critical,” said Sumesh Patel, President, Asia Pacific at SITA. “Air India’s deployment of SITA OptiFlight® and eWAS is a strong example of how smart digital technologies can cut emissions, save fuel, and unlock real operational value across every flight.”

Air India’s Chief Operations Officer, Basil Kwauk, underscored the airline’s commitment to greener operations. “Sustainability and efficiency are core to our transformation into a world-class airline. With SITA OptiFlight® and SITA eWAS, we’re taking meaningful steps to modernize our operations and reduce our carbon footprint.”

SITA OptiFlight® uses historical flight data, aircraft-specific performance models, and 4D weather forecasts to optimize critical phases of flight. At its heart is OptiClimb, which creates customized climb-out schedules for each aircraft, enabling pilots to cut fuel burn during one of the most energy-intensive parts of the journey.

Meanwhile, SITA eWAS equips pilots with real-time weather updates and predictive forecasts, helping them avoid turbulence, re-route efficiently, and make better in-flight decisions.

Together, the two solutions enhance Air India’s operational resilience while supporting its long-term sustainability goals. SITA noted that its optimisation technologies are being expanded across India’s aviation sector, helping carriers strengthen efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
