King Charles Initiative Targets Sustainable Aviation Fuel | The King Charles-backed Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) plans to accelerate the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by focusing on the world’s 10 busiest airports.
The initiative aims to increase SAF production, strengthen airport infrastructure and improve fuel availability at major global aviation hubs. By concentrating efforts on high-traffic airports, SMI believes airlines can access greener fuel more easily for point-to-point operations.
Speaking to FlightGlobal during the Farnborough International Airshow, Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, Chief Executive of SMI, outlined the organisation’s strategy. She explained that building SAF capacity at the busiest airports would create a stronger foundation for wider adoption across the aviation sector.
According to her, expanding infrastructure at these airports would make sustainable fuel more accessible while encouraging greater investment in production. Over time, increased supply could also reduce production costs and make SAF more affordable for airlines.
To finance the programme, SMI has proposed introducing a small levy on airline ticket prices. The organisation said the funds would go directly into developing sustainable aviation fuel and related infrastructure.
Jordan-Saifi stressed that collaboration remains essential to the success of the initiative. She said governments, airports, airlines and fuel suppliers must work together to accelerate the transition to cleaner aviation.
She also noted that momentum behind global net-zero commitments has weakened in recent months. However, she believes coordinated action can demonstrate that scaling up sustainable aviation fuel remains achievable despite current challenges.
In addition to expanding fuel supply, SMI wants to build confidence across the aviation industry by creating practical models that can support long-term decarbonisation.
Earlier this year, the organisation appointed Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive of Dubai Airports, as the CEO Champion of its SAF Pathfinder Initiative. He now leads efforts to drive collaboration and accelerate the deployment of sustainable aviation fuel worldwide.
Sustainable aviation fuel has become a key part of the aviation industry’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions. Although production remains limited, governments, airlines and industry groups continue to invest in technologies and partnerships that can increase supply and lower costs.
Through its latest initiative, SMI hopes to turn the world’s busiest airports into catalysts for cleaner air travel while supporting the aviation sector’s long-term sustainability goals.
