MTN CEO Urges Greater African Economic Integration | MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita has called on African leaders to prioritise economic opportunity over the migration debate, arguing that the continent’s long-term prosperity depends on inclusive growth and stronger regional integration.
Speaking at the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation (KMF) Winter Seminar in Accra, Mupita said Africa’s future would depend on how effectively countries create opportunities that allow people to thrive within the continent.
The seminar brought together leaders from government, business, academia, the diplomatic corps and civil society to discuss the link between migration, development and Africa’s future.
“The future of Africa will not be determined by the borders that separate us, but by the economic opportunities that connect us,” Mupita said.
Economic Opportunity Must Take Centre Stage
According to Mupita, migration should not dominate discussions without addressing the underlying economic challenges that drive people to relocate.
Instead, he urged policymakers to focus on creating jobs, expanding access to markets and building stronger economies.
“If our discussion ends with the language of crisis around migration, we will have treated the symptom and missed the deeper challenge. People move because opportunity is unevenly distributed,” he said.
He added that Africa’s greatest challenge is ensuring that mobility across the continent goes hand in hand with economic opportunity.
Governments Must Create Enabling Conditions
Mupita stressed that governments have a critical role in supporting economic growth. He urged policymakers to introduce predictable regulations, maintain stable policies and allocate sufficient resources to encourage investment and business expansion. Furthermore, he said stronger collaboration between governments and the private sector would help spread prosperity more evenly across the continent.
“Together, we can build a continent where opportunity is more evenly shared and prosperity is more widely created,” he noted.
Investing in Africa’s Demographic Advantage
Mupita also highlighted Africa’s rapidly growing population as one of its greatest strengths. However, he warned that the continent would only benefit from this demographic advantage if countries invested in the right foundations for growth.
These include education and skills development, reliable infrastructure, access to finance, efficient markets and strong institutions.
Without these investments, he said, Africa risks missing a major economic opportunity.
Digital Infrastructure Drives Inclusive Growth
The MTN Group CEO described digital infrastructure as a key driver of economic participation across Africa. He explained that digital services connect people to education, entrepreneurship, financial services, government services and broader markets.
As a result, expanding digital connectivity can help create more inclusive economic opportunities and accelerate regional development.
Mupita said MTN remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote evidence-based discussions on Africa’s development and future.
Building Bridges Across Africa
Reflecting on MTN’s journey, Mupita said the company has grown alongside the continent and shares its long-term aspirations. He emphasised that Africa’s strength lies not only in telecommunications networks but also in stronger connections between people, businesses and ideas.
“MTN believes that Africa’s strength lies in its connectivity—not only through networks, but through people, ideas and shared identity. This initiative is about building bridges, not borders,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Mupita concluded that Africa can unlock sustainable prosperity by expanding economic opportunities, strengthening regional integration and investing in digital infrastructure. He said these priorities, rather than migration alone, will shape the continent’s future growth and development.
