African Airlines Fly into European Headwinds

By Nana Yaa Djan-Parry | African Airlines Fly into European Headwinds | A significant number of African airlines have been deemed unsafe to fly in European skies. This list includes 55 carriers from 11 African countries, specifically Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Liberia, Libya, Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe.

This was contained in the latest update of the EU Air Safety List (ASL) for December 2024. The ASL serves as a critical tool designed to enhance international aviation safety by prohibiting air carriers that do not meet international safety standards from operating within the European Union (EU). Nearly half of the banned carriers on this list are from African nations, highlighting ongoing concerns about aviation safety in the region.

Airlines not included on the ASL are still permitted to operate in Europe, provided they obtain the necessary licenses and comply with the relevant regulations. The list is regularly updated, drawing information from trusted sources, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United States Federal Aviation Administration, and various EU Member States.

Carriers facing restrictions can appeal for removal from the ASL. However, they must first address any existing non-compliances, after which the Air Safety Committee will review the evidence submitted.

This rigorous assessment process underscores the EU’s commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards in aviation, both for its own airspace and for international travelers.
