Ghana Shuts Down Embassy in Tehran Amid Escalating Tensions | Travellers and expatriates should be aware that the Government of Ghana has officially closed its embassy in Tehran due to rising tensions between Iran and Israel.
In a post shared on social media on Monday, 16 June, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, explained that the decision aims to ensure the safety of Ghanaians living in Iran amid the escalating conflict.
“The Mahama administration has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding lives in this volatile situation.
The evacuation process will primarily utilise Iran’s land borders and will cater to Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other nationals currently in the region. Efforts are being coordinated to guarantee a secure passage for all those affected.
Additionally, the Ghanaian government is actively monitoring the situation in Israel and may release further guidance as the circumstances develop. Until then, operations at the Ghanaian embassy in Tel Aviv have been minimized, and Ghanaians in Israel are urged to maintain contact with their consular department.
The government has reiterated its call for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict while assuring that the protection of Ghanaian lives remains a top priority.
