Canadian leisure carrier Air Transat has begun a series of high-level engagements in Ghana as it moves to finalise regulatory approvals for the launch of direct flights between Accra and Canada.

The airline is currently working closely with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Ghana’s aviation sector regulator, as part of the certification and route approval process required to commence operations.

Industry sources indicate that discussions are focused on operational clearances, safety compliance, and commercial frameworks ahead of a planned summer 2026 launch.

The proposed non-stop flight between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Accra International Airport (ACC), starting in the Summer of 2026, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between West Africa and North America and provide more travel options for Ghana’s growing diaspora market.

The airline’s entry aligns with broader efforts to expand international route networks from Accra International Airport and position Ghana as a competitive aviation hub in the region.

The timing of the planned launch is also strategic, with the airline aiming to tap into increased transatlantic travel demand ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The event is expected to drive significant passenger traffic between Africa and North America.

The ongoing engagements between Air Transat and regulatory authorities are critical to ensuring a smooth market entry, particularly in areas such as slot allocation, ground handling arrangements, and passenger facilitation systems.

Growing interest among international carriers in the Ghanaian market, driven by stable demand, improving infrastructure, and government efforts to enhance aviation sector competitiveness.

If successful, the new route will mark a major milestone in Ghana–Canada air connectivity, offering direct access expected to boost tourism, trade, and business travel while strengthening Ghana’s position in the global aviation network.
