Aviation Contributes $2.5 Billion to Nigeria’s Economy – IATA | By Dominick Andoh | Aviation is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy, contributing USD 2.5 billion to the country’s GDP and supporting more than 217,000 jobs, according to new data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Commenting on the findings, Kamil Alawadhi, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, described aviation as a “powerful engine for economic and social development.”

“Nigeria’s National Day is a good opportunity to reflect on the immense value aviation brings to the country. Air transport supports over 217,000 jobs and contributes USD 2.5 billion to Nigeria’s GDP. With one of the fastest-growing populations in Africa and the world, and a predominantly young demographic, there is immense opportunity for future economic growth,” Alawadhi said.

IATA stressed, however, that the aviation sector’s potential can only be unlocked if the government treats aviation as a strategic priority. This includes ensuring robust safety oversight, adherence to global standards, a cost-efficient operating environment free from excessive taxes and charges, and long-term investment in workforce skills.

The report shows that 39,500 people are directly employed in aviation through airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, and manufacturers. This generates USD 702 million in economic output—equivalent to 0.2% of Nigeria’s GDP.

Beyond the direct impact, aviation’s supply chain, employee spending, and tourism activity generate broader benefits. Tourism supported by aviation contributes USD 454.1 million to Nigeria’s GDP and employs 66,600 people. International tourists arriving by air spend an estimated USD 760.2 million annually on local goods and services.

Alawadhi underscored that aviation’s role in Nigeria goes beyond economic figures. “Aviation can deliver on this potential but only if the government makes it a strategic priority, supported by stable policies and long-term vision,” he emphasized.

With the sector’s proven ability to stimulate growth, create jobs, and attract investment, IATA urged Nigerian authorities to build on these gains by aligning policy and regulatory frameworks with global best practices.
