Businessman loses 16 acres of prime airport land over rent default | The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has reclaimed over 16 acres of valuable airport land from the McDan Group of Companies due to a failure to pay the agreed-upon ground rent.
In a statement released in Accra, GACL announced that a high court judgment delivered on May 6, 2025, granted them full re-entry and possession of two parcels of land, measuring approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres.
These parcels are situated near Kotoka International Airport, adjacent to Action Chapel International, and have been under the management of McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group, since 2012.
GACL initiated legal proceedings in February 2025, accusing McDan’s subsidiaries of violating land lease agreements and failing to pay outstanding rent, amounting to $26,296. They sought to recover this amount and obtain a perpetual injunction to prevent any further interference with the properties.
After reviewing the application for summary judgment, the court ruled that McDan had no valid defence, granting all reliefs in favour of GACL and ordering the companies to pay GH¢50,000 in legal costs.
This legal victory followed previous tensions between the parties. In December 2024, McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended due to financial obligations. Although those debts were resolved, the land dispute remained until the court’s intervention.
