Domestic Airlines Set to Reduce Airfares as Ghana Cedi Strengthens

By Dominick Andoh | Domestic Airlines Set to Reduce Airfares as Ghana Cedi Strengthens | Ghana’s two main domestic airlines, Africa World Airlines (AWA) and PassionAir, have announced plans to reduce airfares on all major domestic routes in response to the recent strong performance of the Ghana Cedi against the US Dollar.

The strengthening of the local currency has led to a notable decline in aviation fuel prices, offering a rare opportunity for airlines to pass on cost savings to passengers.

Ghana, being a net importer of fuel and lubricants, has seen its operational costs ease in recent weeks, creating favourable conditions for a downward fare adjustment.

The announcement was made during the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority’s (GCAA) Aviation Stakeholders Breakfast Meeting, held in Accra on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Capt. Kwesi Oteng, the Chief Operating Officer of Africa World Airlines, stated that passengers can expect fare reductions in the coming month, attributing the move to the favourable economic conditions currently prevailing.

Captain Oteng assured AWA has closely monitored the currency trends and fuel price movements. With the current strength of the Cedi, he noted that airlines are in a position to pass on the benefits to valued passengers. “Expect lower fares from next month,” he added.

Similarly, Samuel Razak Takyi, Head of Communications at PassionAir, confirmed that the airline is in advanced discussions to implement a fare review across its network.

“We are actively working on reviewing our fare structure in line with current market conditions. The fare reduction will affect key domestic routes including Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale, Takoradi, and Wa,” Mr. Takyi said.

This development is expected to bring significant relief to domestic travellers, many of whom have raised concerns in recent months about high ticket prices amid inflationary pressures and rising costs of living.

Industry watchers see the move as a positive signal for Ghana’s domestic aviation market, which continues to recover steadily in the post-pandemic period. Lower airfares are expected to boost passenger traffic and support regional economic activity by making air travel more accessible.

The Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe . welcomed the announcement, noting that it aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance affordability and connectivity within the country.
