By Joojo Maapa| Ghana: AG wants private participation in unprofitable regional airports | Ghana’s Auditor General has pushed for private sector participation in some aspects of five existing unprofitable regional airports in the country as part of measure to maximize returns on those investments.
“Furthermore, the Commercial Service Department of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) should identify potential concessionaires to occupy idle spaces to generate more revenue through rent and royalties,” the Auditor General recommended in the recently published 2023 Auditor General’s Report.
The recommendation by the AG comes after a thorough audit of the operations of five regional airports in Ghana revealed that they are commercially not viable.
The Kumasi Airport, now Prempeh I International Airport in the Ashanti Region, Tamale Airport, Wa Airport, the Sunyani Airport and the Ho Airport were all deemed commercially not viable by the Auditor General.
“We conducted an analysis on the operations of five regional airports in terms of their commercial viability and noted that all five regional airports were not commercially viable,” the report stated. Ghana: AG wants private participation in unprofitable regional airports
