“Ghana Airlines” attracts new investor

The Mahama-led administration is to re-open EoI after Despite and partners failed to deliver Ghana's new national airline

“Ghana Airlines” attracts new investor | By David Kwakutse | A new investor has officially tabled an offer to partner the Government of Ghana to establish a new home-based carrier.

After unsuccessful attempts at establishing a new national airline with the selection of Ashanti Airlines and its financial partner the Zotus Group, the new John Mahama-led administration has restarted the process anew.

Decades after the collapse of Ghana Airways and Ghana International Airlines, successive governments have tried to get a new home-based airline flying by accepting proposals, and in many instances, signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key operators such as Ethiopian Airlines, Egypt Air, Boeing, and Ashanti Airlines, among others.

“The last attempt by the previous administration to re-establish a National Airline was unsuccessful. We will open a transparent Expression of Interest to invite competent and established partners to help us create a national airline,” President Mahama said during his State of the Nation Address to Ghana’s 276-member legislature on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

The Ministry of Transport, the main entity charged with overseeing the process, has received the first of many expected Express of Interest (EoI) from the World Aviation Group (WAG).

The Minister for Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, speaking on Ghana’s expectations of an ideal partner, said: “A strong national airline supports Ghana’s economic growth and regional connectivity. We are looking for a partner that can deliver a sustainable and efficient model that works for all Ghanaians.”

World Aviation Group is a Spanish company with over three decades of experience in aerial services, training, consultancy and aircraft maintenance.

The company in a meeting with the Minister for Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, expressed readiness to invest in modern aircraft, developing Ghana as a regional hub, and prioritise the customer experience.

The company is expected to present its firm proposal to government through the Ministry of Transport after conducting market demand studies, and preparing a detailed business plan.
