By Dominick Andoh | Ghana’s New Domestic Airline Set To Launch This Year | Passengers travelling from Accra to three major regional airports in Ghana—Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi—will have more options starting July 2025. This expansion is due to the upcoming entry of Relax Airlines into the domestic and regional aviation market in the coming months.
Inspectors from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the aviation sector regulator, are conducting an inspection of the airline’s DH8 Q400 aircraft and ATO in Lithuania. Once this inspection is complete, the aircraft—the first of a planned fleet of three DH8 Q400s—will be transported to Ghana to commence operations.
Background to Relax Airlines:
In June 2015, Fly540 Ghana was acquired by DWG-G Company Limited for a nominal sum of $1. This transaction followed Fastjet, the former owner of Fly540, suspending operations in May 2014. Fastjet sought to shift Fly540’s established full-service model to align with its own low-cost operational framework.
Subsequent to the acquisition, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced that Fly540 Ghana would be rebranded as Royal Fly-GH and would commence operations anew. However, the anticipated resumption of services was delayed due to the absence of the necessary clearance from the GCAA.
After obtaining an Air Carrier License, the final step in issuing an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) is conducting an aircraft inspection. This certification will allow the newly established Relax Airlines to commence domestic and regional flights after a decade-long hiatus.
