Ghana’s Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in aviation infrastructure to strengthen the country’s position as a preferred destination for international air travel.

His remarks came as Uganda Airlines officially commenced operations in Ghana on October 27, 2026, with the introduction of four weekly flights between Entebbe and Accra.

Speaking at the launch of the new service at Accra International Airport, the minister emphasised the importance of sustained infrastructure development in supporting growth in the aviation industry and improving Ghana’s competitiveness as an aviation hub.

He said continued investment in aviation infrastructure would be essential to accommodating growth in passenger traffic, supporting airline operations and strengthening the country’s capacity to attract international air services.

The entry of Uganda Airlines into the Ghanaian market provides another connection between West and East Africa, opening additional opportunities for business travel, tourism and commercial exchanges.

The airline will operate Boeing 737-800 aircraft on the route, with flights scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Its arrival also expands Accra’s international aviation network, bringing the number of East Africa-based airlines serving the airport to four, and the total number of international airlines serving Accra to 29.

Passengers using the new service will have access to 19 destinations across 14 countries, including Nairobi, London, Dubai, Mumbai and Zanzibar.

The service is expected to improve access between Ghana and Uganda while providing travellers with additional options for onward journeys across Africa and beyond.

The new route also comes at a time when African countries and airlines are seeking to strengthen intra-continental connectivity and reduce reliance on indirect routes through Europe and the Middle East.

For Ghana, improved air connectivity could support the movement of traders, investors and tourists while creating opportunities for businesses seeking partnerships in East African markets.

The development could also contribute to the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to deepen economic integration and expand trade among African countries.
