Kumasi Airport prepares for scheduled international flights | Prempeh 1 International Airport, Kumasi, is gearing up to welcome scheduled passenger flights from international airlines as the runway extension project approaches completion.
The expansion will extend the runway from its current length of 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, enabling the safe operation of larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320, A330, and Boeing 737, commonly used for both regional and long-haul international flights.
For many years, international airlines have pointed to the limitations of the existing runway as the primary reason for not offering direct flights from Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas to Prempeh I International Airport.

Ghana’s Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, confirmed in a media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, that the runway extension is now 90% complete.
Additionally, Mr. Nikpe announced plans to enhance night operations as part of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
Official operations at Prempeh I International Airport will commence on July 1, 2024, with extended nighttime hours: from 8 PM to 11 PM at Kumasi International Airport and from 6 PM to 10 PM at Tamale International Airport.
