South African Airways Sets Date to Resume Accra-Washington Flights | By Joojo Maapa | South African Airways (SAA) plans to resume its Accra-Washington intercontinental flights by the end of 2026, marking a remarkable turnaround for the South African airline.
SAA’s CEO John Lamola, during a media briefing in Ghana, said the return to the Accra-Washington route not only aims to connect travellers to the U.S. but also to cater to the vibrant Ghanaian diaspora, especially those based in the Washington, D.C. area.
Lamola indicated that while the goal is to reestablish these flights before 2026 concludes, the timeline may be influenced by regulatory approval processes and fleet readiness.
The airline originally provided non-stop flights from Johannesburg to New York using its Airbus A340s, later transitioning to the more advanced Airbus A350s in 2019. Flights to Washington typically included a technical stop in Accra, Ghana, or occasional stops in Dakar, Senegal.
SAA has a fleet of 19 aircraft, including two Airbus A340s, two A330s, and thirteen (13) A320s and two Boeing 737s.
Having restarted operations in September 2021, SAA has been diligently working to strengthen its international presence and broaden its route offerings. This anticipated return to the U.S. market represents a significant step forward in the airline’s revitalization plan.
