A Brussels Airlines flight operating from Accra to Lomé returned safely to the Accra International Airport (KIA) on Monday evening after the crew detected a technical fault shortly after take-off, prompting a precautionary return in line with international aviation safety procedures.

According to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Flight SN278 departed Accra at 18:06 GMT but experienced a technical issue during the initial phase of the flight. Acting in accordance with established safety protocols, the flight crew elected to return to Accra, where the aircraft landed safely just 12 minutes later at 18:18 GMT.

The GCAA in a press release issued on Monday, commended the professionalism of the flight crew, noting that the decision to return was a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers and crew.

The regulator stressed that such occurrences, while uncommon, demonstrate the aviation industry’s uncompromising commitment to safety, where even minor technical anomalies are treated with the utmost seriousness.

The Authority added that the technical issue is now being investigated by Brussels Airlines under its maintenance and safety management procedures, with oversight from the GCAA.

Following the incident, Brussels Airlines cancelled Flight SN278 and has begun providing assistance to affected passengers in accordance with the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019 – Part 2 (Consumer Protection). The airline is expected to facilitate rebooking and other passenger support measures as required under the regulations.

The Authority reaffirmed that it will continue to monitor the investigation while ensuring that all applicable safety and consumer protection requirements are fully observed.
