GACL Kicks Out McDan Aviation From Terminal 1 | By Joojo Maapa
The Ghana Airports Company Limited has officially terminated its Fixed Base Operation agreement with McDan Aviation Handling Services Limited over persistent rent and licence fee defaults at Accra International Airport.
In a statement released on March 12, the airport operator said the decision followed several failed attempts to recover outstanding debts owed by the company.
The agreement, signed in August 2022, granted McDan Aviation the right to provide Fixed Base Operations services at designated areas within Terminal 1.
GACL explained that the company was required to pay licence fees, royalties and rent under the contract but began defaulting on its obligations shortly after operations commenced.
According to the airport authority, the company accumulated significant arrears from 2022, prompting management to restrict access to Terminal 1 in late 2024.
Although the outstanding debts covering the period between 2022 and 2024 were eventually settled, McDan Aviation again fell into default when no payments were received for rent and royalties throughout 2025.
The airport authority said it served formal notice on 10 January 2025, giving the company 90 days to settle the outstanding debt as stipulated under the contract. Three additional reminders were issued during 2025.
McDan Aviation subsequently proposed a payment plan and submitted three post-dated cheques but later requested that the airport operator refrain from presenting them due to financial constraints.
After the notice period elapsed without settlement, GACL terminated the agreement on 16 January 2026 and locked up the facility on 9 February 2026.
The airport authority has since instructed the company to remove its equipment and belongings from the premises. GACL also indicated that it is pursuing the recovery of remaining outstanding debts owed by the company.
