Ghana Confirms Evacuation of 85 Ghanaians from Cambodia
The Government of Ghana has successfully evacuated 85 Ghanaian nationals from Cambodia between March and May 2026 following coordinated diplomatic efforts led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to an official statement released on May 29, the evacuation exercise was facilitated through Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which also oversees diplomatic relations with Cambodia. The ministry explained that the initiative was carried out in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to support Ghanaians in Cambodia who voluntarily expressed the desire to return home.
The announcement comes amid widespread circulation of a fake immigration notice on social and traditional media platforms. The false document claimed that Cambodian authorities had ordered citizens from several African countries, including Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon and Uganda, to leave the country before May 31 or risk arrest and imprisonment.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the notice as entirely false after engaging Cambodian authorities through diplomatic channels. The ministry clarified that no Cambodian state institution had issued such a directive.
In its statement, the ministry reassured the public that the evacuation exercise had already begun before the fake notice surfaced online. It noted that several Ghanaian residents in Cambodia had earlier contacted Ghanaian authorities seeking assistance to voluntarily return home.
“The Government of the Republic of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has already facilitated the evacuation of eighty-five Ghanaian nationals between March and May 2026,” the statement said.
The ministry further disclosed that arrangements are currently underway to evacuate an additional 76 Ghanaian nationals who remain in Cambodia and have also expressed interest in returning home.
Officials say the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad through diplomatic engagement and emergency support when necessary.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urged the public to disregard false information circulating online and rely only on official communication from government institutions. It reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Cambodia while continuing to provide support for affected Ghanaian nationals.
