Flood Risk in Accra: Interior Ministry Issues Emergency Warning Ahead of Heavy Rain | Residents across Greater Accra are being urged to prepare for possible flooding after the Ministry of the Interior issued an emergency weather alert ahead of expected rainfall on Monday morning.
In a message circulated on Sunday evening, the ministry cautioned that “moderate rain was likely between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Monday, July 6, with a 40 per cent chance of occurrence,” warning that communities in low-lying areas could be at risk of flooding.
The advisory encouraged residents to avoid walking or driving through flooded roads and to remain alert as weather conditions change. Authorities stressed that taking early precautions could help prevent accidents and reduce the impact of the expected downpour.
The warning follows a forecast from the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), which predicts widespread rain and thunderstorms across several parts of the country. Coastal communities, including Accra, Kasoa, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Aflao and Anloga, are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, while inland areas may also experience showers before conditions gradually improve later in the day.
GMet also warned that thick mist and fog could reduce visibility in parts of the forest and mountainous regions during the early morning hours, posing additional risks for motorists. Drivers have therefore been advised to reduce speed, switch on their headlights when necessary and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads.
Marine conditions are also expected to remain rough, prompting authorities to advise fisherfolk and commercial boat operators to exercise extra caution before heading out to sea.
With southern Ghana already experiencing weeks of intermittent rainfall, officials say the latest alert is intended to give residents enough time to safeguard lives and property. The Interior Ministry has urged the public to continue monitoring official weather updates and follow all safety directives until conditions improve.
