Construction of a seven-story multi-purpose car park and airport hotel complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport is expected to be completed in 2028, marking one of the most significant commercial infrastructure investments at Ghana’s premier international gateway in recent years.
The project, which entered the construction phase following the closure of the existing Terminal 3 car park in July, reflects the Ghana Airports Company Limited’s (GACL) strategy of expanding airport capacity through commercially viable infrastructure rather than relying solely on aeronautical revenues.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to cut sod for the commencement of the project at the end of August 2026.
The new T3 car park project is to be funded by the Airport Infrastructure Development Charge (AIDC). The AIDC, which took effect on April 1, 2026, is expected to generate approximately $800 million over a 10-year period to finance critical aviation infrastructure.
Under the approved framework, international passengers are charged US$50 per trip. Travelers within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) pay US$15 per trip, while other African routes cost US$30 per trip. The Ministry of Transport holds these funds.
The new T3 car park, when completed, will be a seven-story car park with 2,000 parking bays. Beyond parking infrastructure, the expansion includes a 4,000 square metre retail complex featuring shopping outlets and restaurants, as well as a sky-view lounge designed to enhance the airport experience for both passengers and visitors.
A major highlight of the project is the development of a two-tier airport hotel facility, comprising a 250-room budget hotel and a 120-room luxury hotel. The facility is expected to cater to transit passengers, including those on long layovers or disrupted flights, while also supporting Ghana’s growing role as a connecting hub.
Additionally, a conference centre and business facilities are planned to attract corporate travellers and position the airport as a multi-functional aviation and commercial hub.
The project comes as Accra continues to strengthen its position as one of West Africa’s fastest-growing aviation gateways, supported by expanding international airline services, increasing transit traffic and new airport investments.
When completed in 2028, the multi-purpose facility is expected to ease congestion around Terminal 3, improve passenger convenience and reinforce the Accra International Airport’s competitiveness against other regional hubs seeking to capture growing passenger and business travel across Africa.
The investment also aligns with GACL’s broader strategy of enhancing the airport experience while building commercially resilient aviation infrastructure capable of supporting Ghana’s long-term aviation ambitions.
