New Look Accra Airport Terminal 2 to Open by December | By Prince Offeh
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed that the extensive refurbishment of Terminal 2 at the Accra International Airport will be completed by December 2026, paving the way for the facility to reopen to passengers ahead of the busy Christmas and New Year travel season.
The US$15 million modernisation project forms part of GACL’s broader strategy to expand passenger handling capacity at Ghana’s busiest airport while enhancing the overall travel experience.
Speaking during a parliamentary oversight visit by the Roads and Transportation Committee, GACL Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, said work on the terminal is progressing steadily and remains on schedule for completion before the end of the year.
Once operational, the refurbished Terminal 2 will be configured to accommodate both domestic and international flights, providing much-needed operational flexibility and easing pressure on Terminal 3, which has experienced rising passenger volumes as more international airlines expand services into Ghana.
The reopening of Terminal 2 comes at a strategic time for Ghana’s aviation sector. December traditionally represents the country’s busiest travel period, driven by holiday traffic, the December In GH, otherwise known as “Detty December” tourism season, and increased arrivals from the Ghanaian diaspora.
Bringing Terminal 2 back into service before the festive season will significantly improve passenger flow, reduce congestion at security and check-in areas, and strengthen the Accra International Airport’s ability to handle growing traffic.
The refurbishment complements several infrastructure investments currently underway at the airport, including the deployment of next-generation 3D security screening systems, the construction of a new multi-storey car park and hotel complex at Terminal 3, and projects financed through the Aviation Infrastructure Development Charge (AIDC) introduced earlier this year.
With the reopening of a modernised Terminal 2, GACL is positioning Accra International Airport to meet rising passenger demand while reinforcing Ghana’s ambition to remain one of West Africa’s leading aviation hubs during the peak travel season and beyond.
