China Southern Airlines is exploring a direct Guangzhou-Accra service, a move that could significantly alter the competitive dynamics of Ghana’s growing Asia-facing aviation market and put pressure on carriers that currently rely on connecting traffic between Ghana and China.

The airline, according to AviationGhana.com sources with knowledge of the issue, has opened discussions through diplomatic channels to register its interest. The proposal revives an initiative previously reported by AviationGhana, when Ghana’s former Ambassador to China said discussions with China Southern were at an advanced stage.

A non-stop Guangzhou service would give Ghanaian traders, business travellers and other passengers a direct alternative to the established hub-and-spoke options currently used to reach China.

Ghana-China trade had averaged about US$14 billion annually, while the absence of a direct connection meant many Ghanaian traders travelled through hubs including Dubai, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha, and Istanbul.

Chinese imports to Ghana include large construction vehicles, delivery trucks, rubber footwear, coated flat-rolled iron, electrical machinery, clothing and apparel, and other household goods. Ghana’s exports to China include: crude petroleum, manganese ore, and aluminum/other mineral ores.

China Southern’s Guangzhou hub is particularly relevant. The airline has built an extensive network from southern China, connecting Guangzhou with markets across Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America, the Middle East and Africa.

That network could make a direct Accra service more than a point-to-point route. It could become another gateway for Ghanaian passengers travelling deeper into China and for Chinese passengers accessing Ghana and potentially other West African markets.

Pressure on established carriers

The proposed entry would increase competitive pressure on airlines already serving the Ghana-China market through their respective hubs, including Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Kenya Airways and Air Tanzania.

For these airlines, China Southern’s advantage would be the removal of a connection for passengers travelling specifically between Accra and Guangzhou.

The competitive response could therefore extend beyond schedules to fares, baggage allowances, connection times, cargo capacity and loyalty programmes.

That pressure would ultimately benefit passengers if carriers respond with more competitive pricing and additional capacity.

Etihad faces another test

The proposed China Southern operation would also arrive as Etihad Airways prepares to enter the Accra market.

Etihad has announced plans to begin direct Abu Dhabi-Accra flights on March 17, 2027, creating another Gulf gateway for Ghanaian travellers. AviationGhana reported that the service is expected to strengthen connections between Ghana, the Middle East and wider international markets.

With Etihad also expanding its Asian network, the Accra market is becoming increasingly attractive to airlines competing for Africa-Asia traffic.

More capacity, greater choice

For Ghana, the significance of China Southern extends beyond another airline logo at the Accra International Airport.

A direct Guangzhou service could lower travel friction for Ghanaian businesses engaged in China trade, improve access to manufacturing and commercial centres, and create opportunities for tourism and cargo.

It would also reinforce Accra’s emergence as an increasingly important international gateway.

The broader pattern is already visible. Air Tanzania’s entry into Accra, for example, has been linked to stronger tourism, trade and business connectivity, while competition has the potential to stimulate fares and cargo options.

With the entry of China Southern, Accra’s Asia market could shift from being dominated by connecting hubs to a more competitive network of direct and one-stop options, a development likely to give passengers and businesses greater choice.
