The refurbishment of the VIP Lounge at the Accra International Airport, managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is on course for completion and handover later this year.
The project is expected to significantly improve the arrival and departure experience for foreign dignitaries and holders of diplomatic passports.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who inspected the ongoing works on Friday, September 4, 2026, said he was impressed with the progress and quality of execution. He said the project would be completed within the year.
The upgraded facility is expected to provide a more comfortable and efficient environment for high-level official travellers using Ghana’s principal international gateway.
For foreign dignitaries arriving in Ghana, the facility is intended to provide a dedicated and more convenient setting as they transition through the airport, while departing dignitaries and diplomatic passport holders are expected to benefit from a smoother and more comfortable airport experience.
The VIP facility is particularly significant for Ghana’s diplomatic engagements, as the Accra International Airport (AIA) is often the first and final point of contact for heads of government, senior officials, diplomats and other high-ranking international visitors.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, the project is being delivered without recourse to taxpayer funds. He said the refurbishment had been structured as a corporate social responsibility initiative, with local Ghanaian businesses providing funding directly to local contractors of their choice working on the project.
The Estate Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he said, is supervising the project to ensure that the required standards are maintained.
The Minister described the initiative as a demonstration of what could be achieved through private-sector support without relying on public funds and conventional public procurement.
The revamped VIP Lounge is therefore expected not only to enhance passenger comfort and operational convenience for its intended users, but also to provide Ghana with a more fitting reception and departure facility for its diplomatic community and international guests.
Mr Ablakwa, in an X post said the project represented “a great symbol of what can be achieved without public funds and public procurement.”
