Africa’s aviation industry will require 75,000 new aviation professionals over the next 20 years, creating significant opportunities for workers, training institutions and young people seeking careers in the continent’s expanding air transport sector.
The projection is contained in Boeing’s Africa Commercial Market Outlook 2026–2045, which forecasts continued growth in passenger traffic and a more than doubling of Africa’s commercial jet fleet over the period.
Boeing estimates that the continent will require an average of 3,750 new skilled aviation personnel every year to support the growing fleet and expanding aviation services market.
Cabin crew will represent the largest category of new personnel, with demand for 28,000 additional workers over the forecast period. Technicians will account for another 25,000, while airlines will require 22,000 new pilots.
The pilot requirement is particularly significant for Africa’s connectivity ambitions. Boeing projects that 77% of the 22,000 new pilots will support regional networks, while the remaining 23% will serve global networks.
The employment opportunity extends beyond airlines. As Africa’s fleet expands, demand will also grow for aircraft maintenance, training, digital services and other aviation support functions. Boeing projects a $140 billion aviation services market between 2026 and 2045, including $90 billion in maintenance, $45 billion in digital services and $5 billion in training and pilot services.
The scale of the projected workforce requirement presents an opportunity for African governments, universities, aviation academies and private training institutions to strengthen skills development and create clearer pathways into aviation careers.
It could also support efforts to retain talent within the continent by expanding access to professional training and specialised technical programmes.
With passenger traffic projected to grow by 5.8% annually and the commercial fleet expected to increase from 755 aircraft in 2025 to 1,625 by 2045, the demand for aviation professionals is likely to extend across multiple segments of the industry.
