Accra Airport’s Three-Hour Rule Extends Pre-Departure Wait | By Joojo Maapa
Passengers departing from Accra International Airport must now arrive at least three hours before their scheduled flights, marking a significant extension of the time travellers are expected to allow at Ghana’s main international gateway.
Previously, passengers could often complete airport screening and related departure formalities within 30 to 45 minutes, depending on passenger volumes and airline requirements.
The new directive requires travellers to build a much larger time buffer into their journeys, following the introduction of additional security checks before entry into the Departure Hall.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) announced the three-hour requirement after security agencies introduced preliminary luggage screening at the airport. The checks, involving scanning equipment and sniffer dogs, are intended to strengthen efforts to prevent narcotics and other prohibited items from being transported through the airport.
The measures follow heightened concern over narcotics-related arrests abroad involving travellers linked to Ghana. Security agencies have responded with additional screening before passengers proceed to airline check-in counters and the usual departure procedures.
While the new arrangement is intended to strengthen airport security, it represents a notable change in the passenger experience. Travellers who previously planned their airport arrival around a relatively short screening process must now account for the additional checks, possible queues and other departure formalities.
The three-hour requirement does not necessarily mean that screening itself takes three hours. Instead, it sets the minimum advance arrival time passengers must observe to ensure they have enough time to complete the new procedures and board their flights.
For business travellers, families and passengers connecting from other parts of Accra, the longer lead time could mean leaving home earlier and spending more time at the airport. It may also create pressure on airport facilities during peak departure periods.
The challenge for airport management and security agencies will be to maintain the effectiveness of the enhanced checks while ensuring passengers move through the process efficiently.
