Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, has commended Ghana for allowing holders of all categories of Ugandan passports to enter the country without a visa, describing easier movement across African borders as an important complement to improved air connectivity.

Byamukama made the remarks as Uganda Airlines launched four weekly flights between Entebbe and Accra on October 27, 2026, establishing a direct connection between the East African country and Ghana.

He said stronger air links between African countries would deliver greater benefits when accompanied by policies that facilitate travel, trade and investment.

Improved connectivity, he stressed, must go hand in hand with measures that make it easier for Africans to cross borders and pursue economic opportunities in other countries.

His comments highlight the importance of combining aviation development with travel policies that encourage the movement of people and strengthen commercial relationships across the continent.

The new Uganda Airlines service will operate four times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

The route is expected to improve access between West and East Africa, creating opportunities for tourism, business travel and trade between Ghana and Uganda.

The service also expands Accra’s international aviation network, bringing the number of East Africa-based airlines serving the airport to four.

Passengers will be able to connect to 19 destinations across 14 countries, including Nairobi, London, Dubai, Mumbai and Zanzibar.

For Ugandan businesses and travellers, the connection provides access to Accra, one of West Africa’s key commercial centres. Ghanaian traders, investors and tourists, meanwhile, will have an additional gateway to Uganda and other destinations accessible through the airline’s network.

The minister’s emphasis on visa facilitation comes amid wider efforts to strengthen intra-African trade and mobility.

Easier cross-border travel could support the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by helping businesspeople establish partnerships, explore new markets and pursue investment opportunities.

It could also encourage tourism operators to develop multi-country travel packages linking destinations across different African regions.
