Emirates Remains Profitable Despite Gulf Crisis

The escalating Gulf crisis and rising aviation fuel costs have significantly affected Emirates airline’s financial performance, with the Dubai-based carrier reporting a 68 per cent decline in half-year profit before tax.

Despite the regional instability and operational disruptions, the airline remained profitable, recording AED 3.7 billion (US$1 billion) for the first half of the 2026–27 financial year.

The results, covering the six months to September 30, 2026, represent a substantial drop compared with the same period last year, reflecting the financial pressures facing the aviation industry amid geopolitical tensions across the Gulf region.

Emirates’ revenue also declined by 13 per cent to AED 56.9 billion (US$15.5 billion), compared with the corresponding period last year. Although strong cargo performance provided some support, higher fuel prices significantly eroded profitability, adding to the challenges of operating in an increasingly volatile regional environment.

At Group level, Emirates recorded a profit before tax of AED 4.1 billion (US$1.1 billion), down 66 per cent year-on-year, while total revenue fell 12 per cent to AED 66.2 billion (US$18 billion).

The Group’s ground handling, catering and travel services subsidiary, dnata, also experienced a decline, reporting a 51 per cent drop in profit before tax to AED 410 million (US$112 million). Its revenue decreased by 7 per cent to AED 11 billion (US$3 billion), partly due to reduced business volumes in some of its UAE and UK operations.

The financial performance highlights how regional conflict can affect aviation through airspace restrictions, changing travel patterns, operational disruptions and increased operating expenses. Nevertheless, Emirates maintained operations and continued serving international destinations.

Emirates Group Chairman and Chief Executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum credited the UAE government for its coordinated efforts to ensure the safe and smooth resumption of air transport following military activity across the Gulf.

He also emphasised that the Group had maintained investments in fleet expansion, product improvements and future capabilities despite the challenging conditions.

His Highness (HH) Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said: “It has been a demanding six months, and once again our business model and our people stood up to the test. Against unprecedented regional challenges and high fuel prices, the Group has delivered a profit before tax of AED 4.1 billion (US$ 1.1 billion). Customer demand held firm and our cargo operations made a strong contribution, keeping revenue and cash levels healthy even as global jet fuel prices doubled against the same period last year, impacting our costs and profitability.

“I’d like to thank the UAE government for its decisive response and its co-ordination of all stakeholders to enable the safe resumption of air transport in the aftermath of military activity across the Gulf region. The government’s measures have also led to the easing of travel advisories to and through the UAE. This has allowed us to restore our operations with confidence and to keep serving our customers and communities.”

With continued investment and a strong business foundation, Emirates believes it is well-positioned to navigate high fuel prices and geopolitical volatility.

“Throughout this time, we have not paused our investments. Emirates and dnata continue to commit significant resources to expand our fleet, enhance our products and services, and develop capabilities that will shape the future of our business. This is how we stay ahead and stay resilient to external challenges,” he added.

Emirates half-year results demonstrate that while the Gulf crisis has considerably weakened Emirates’ profitability, it has not pushed the airline into losses. Its ability to remain profitable underscores its resilience amid an uncertain aviation environment.
