Air Namibia Plans Return to Accra after restructuring | By Dominick Andoh | Air Namibia will once again connect Accra and Namibia, rekindling a route that was suspended years ago due to low passenger numbers, largely caused by restrictive visa requirements for Ghanaian travellers.

Recent developments indicate that with a fully operational Namibian High Commission now present in Accra, visa access has significantly improved, paving the way for the airline to resume services once its administrative and operational restructuring is completed. Ghana’s growing diplomatic ties with Namibia further supports its position as a gateway to southern Africa.

According to sources, Air Namibia is targeting a relaunch of West African services, covering the Windhoek–Lagos–Accra rotation, sometime between June and December 2026, following a structured public–private partnership plan spearheaded by the Namibian government.

The airline aims to secure sustainability through a detailed market study and a PPP agreement by the end of 2025.

Although no official statement has been posted on Air Namibia’s website about the Ghana relaunch, the carrier’s planned regional expansion, AviationGhana sources say,  includes reinstating the Lagos–Accra segment alongside Windhoek .

A revival of this route will address a long-standing gap in intra-African connectivity, offering direct access for Ghanaian travellers wishing to explore southern Africa, including Namibia and as a convenient gateway to South Africa.

In the past, visa hurdles—often involving sending applications to neighbouring countries, became a major obstacle to route viability. With a fully functioning Namibian diplomatic mission now in Accra, these challenges have been significantly reduced.

When Air Namibia last operated the service, it utilised an Airbus A319 aircraft and served Accra via Lagos, operating up to four weekly flights. That effort signalled the airline’s commitment to connecting West to Southern Africa and enhancing intercontinental tourism and trade.

Tourism analysts say that a resumed Air Namibia route aligns with Ghana’s ambition to serve as an aviation hub and supports increased people-to-people flow across Africa.

AviationGhana will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on scheduling, fares, and the official launch once confirmed by Air Namibia or the Namibian government.
