Etihad Airways has confirmed plans to commence direct flights between Accra and Abu Dhabi, marking a significant boost to air connectivity between Ghana and the Middle East.

The airline disclosed the development via an official post on its X (formerly Twitter) platform, confirming the launch of March 17, 2027, for the highly anticipated route.

The new service is expected to strengthen travel, trade, and tourism links between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates.

The Accra–Abu Dhabi route will provide passengers with a direct connection between Accra International Airport and Zayed International Airport, eliminating the need for stopovers that currently dominate travel options on the corridor.

Existing journeys between the two cities often involve connections through hubs such as Addis Ababa or Doha and can take over 14 hours.

The new route aligns with Etihad’s broader network expansion strategy aimed at enhancing Abu Dhabi’s position as a global aviation hub while deepening its footprint in Africa.

The airline, in the same post, announced that it will commence services to key Africa markets including: Asmara in Eritrea, Harare in Zimbabwe, Kinshasa in DR Congo, Lagos in Nigeria, and Lubumbashi in DR Congo

The development also comes at a time when demand for travel between West Africa and the Gulf region continues to rise, driven by business, tourism, and diaspora traffic. Analysts note that a direct service could improve convenience, reduce travel time, and stimulate passenger volumes on the route.

While full operational details such as frequency and aircraft type are yet to be disclosed, the confirmation signals renewed momentum in Ghana’s aviation sector, particularly in attracting major international carriers.

Etihad Airways is one of the two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates, the other being Emirates.
