Accra, Ghana – October 29, 2025. GCAA Activates Contingency Plan to Ensure Flight Safety Amid Air Traffic Controllers’ Strike Threat | By David Kwakutse

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has assured airlines, aviation stakeholders, and the travelling public of uninterrupted air traffic services across Ghana’s airspace despite a planned strike action by the Ghana Air Traffic Safety Electronics Association (GhATSEA) scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2025.

In an official statement issued Wednesday evening, the Authority said it has activated a comprehensive contingency plan to ensure the safe, reliable, and secure provision of air traffic management and communication services across the Accra Flight Information Region (FIR).

The GCAA noted that the move is part of proactive measures to maintain operational continuity and prevent disruptions to both domestic and international flight operations.

“Management has developed and implemented a CNS/ATM Systems Contingency Plan to maintain operational continuity and avoid disruptions to both domestic and international flight operations,” the statement said.

According to the Authority, the contingency plan outlines “detailed operational procedures, designated response teams, and robust coordination mechanisms” aimed at ensuring service integrity and aviation safety during the industrial action period.

The GCAA also urged airlines, aviation partners, and passengers to remain calm and confident in the systems that have been put in place.

“GCAA remains fully committed to maintaining the highest standards of air navigation service delivery and ensuring the safety and security of all flights within Ghana’s airspace,” it added.

The statement reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to staff welfare and professional development, indicating that efforts continue to promote capacity-building and constructive engagement with employee groups.

The GCAA, established in 1986, regulates air transport in Ghana, licenses air operations, and oversees airspace management within the Accra Flight Information Region — which extends beyond Ghana’s borders and covers parts of several West African states.

The Authority assured the travelling public that operations at Kotoka International Airport and other domestic airports remain fully functional as it continues to monitor the situation closely.
