Ghana Backs Pipeline Giant to Guarantee Reliable Energy

Ghana Backs Pipeline Giant to Guarantee Reliable Energy | By Priscilla Mba | Ghana’s Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has underscored the central role of the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) in ensuring the country’s energy security and pledged the government’s commitment to meeting all financial obligations to guarantee a steady supply of natural gas.

Speaking during a high-level engagement with WAPCo’s leadership in Accra, the Minister emphasized that Ghana’s industrial growth and reliable power supply remain heavily dependent on the efficiency of gas transportation through the West African Gas Pipeline.

“The operations of WAPCo remain central to Ghana’s energy security. As a government, we are committed to deepening collaboration with partners like WAPCo to ensure access, efficiency, and affordability in our energy supply chain,” Mr. Jinapor said.

He further stressed government’s determination to ensure financial discipline in meeting obligations to WAPCo, noting that such commitment is critical to uninterrupted supply of gas to power plants. “We will continue to build the right frameworks and infrastructure to support not only Ghana’s energy needs but also regional integration through the West African gas network,” he added.

The visit also served as an introduction of WAPCo’s newly appointed Managing Director, Mr. Abiodun Bodunrin, who has taken over from Ms. Michelle Burket.

Mr. Bodunrin reaffirmed the company’s dedication to Ghana’s energy agenda. “WAPCo is proud of its contribution to Ghana’s energy landscape, and under my leadership, we will work even more closely with stakeholders to expand infrastructure, ensure reliable gas supply, and strengthen long-term sustainability,” he said.

Both parties expressed optimism that the strengthened collaboration will guarantee sustainable and affordable energy for Ghana while supporting wider regional integration. The government’s assurance to honor all commitments to WAPCo, industry analysts note, is a critical step toward ensuring energy stability in the medium to long term.
