Luanda welcomes back familiar airline in March | In a significant development for bilateral relations, Kenya and Angola have pledged to enhance cooperation by reinstating direct flights between Nairobi and Luanda. This commitment was made following a high-profile meeting between Kenyan President William Ruto and Angolan President João Lourenço during a recent visit by President Ruto
The resumption of direct flights by Kenya Airways is expected to provide a substantial boost to trade and tourism between the two countries. In a notable reciprocal arrangement, Angola has agreed to adopt Kenya’s visa-free policy for Angolan citizens, simplifying travel for Kenyans, especially professionals such as educators. President Ruto highlighted the impact of this agreement, stating, “This move will significantly ease the movement of our professionals, such as teachers, to Angola.”
The leaders also discussed critical continental issues during their meeting, including ongoing peace initiatives in the Great Lakes region, particularly the Luanda Process aimed at fostering peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Both presidents underscored the necessity of a collaborative effort involving the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) to strengthen peace initiatives across the region.
“Peace and security in our continent are paramount, and we are committed to a comprehensive and inclusive approach to ensure its success,” President Ruto affirmed.
Additionally, President Ruto, an advocate for reforms within the African Union, invited President Lourenço to a retreat in Kenya later this month. This gathering will act as a vital precursor to the forthcoming AU Heads of State Summit in February.
In a further diplomatic move, President Ruto formally sought President Lourenço’s backing for former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
This renewed partnership between Kenya and Angola reflects a shared vision of growth, stability, and cooperation on the African continent.
