Mahama offers hope for US$25million Ho Airport

Mahama offers hope for US$25million Ho Airport | By Patrick Acheampong | President John Dramani Mahama says his government will transform the Ho Airport into a major aviation training hub and aircraft maintenance facility to serve the West Africa sub-region.

Speaking in Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, he said: “In our ongoing efforts to revitalise the Ho Airport, the government will facilitate the establishment of a state-of-the-art pilot training academy and a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility.”

The US$25million Ho Airport, funded by the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), has a 1,900 metres runway, a traffic control tower, 1,150 capacity passenger waiting area, and an automatic fire detection system among others

The euphoria that surrounded the official inauguration of the US$25 million Ho Airport back in 2018, created the belief that the facility was going to open up the Volta Region and transform the socio-economic fabric of the Volta Region.

However, initial attempts by Passion Air and Africa World Airlines (AWA) to serve the Ho Airport were suspended mainly due to a lack of passengers.

The facility has largely remained idle, with huge overhead costs to the facility manager, Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

“The Volta Region will become a centre of excellence for aviation training and aircraft maintenance. This project will create significant employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and bolster tourism in Ho and the surrounding communities,” President Mahama said while presenting the State of The Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday in Ghana’s capital. Accra.

AWA and partners to establish first training center this year

Africa World Airlines (AWA) and its international partners have successfully concluded negotiations with the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) to establish a comprehensive training center for pilots and other aviation professionals at Ho Airport.

Plans are in place to construct the training school adjacent to the Ho Airport Terminal building using the airport’s existing facilities. During a recent visit by the management of GACL and AWA’s founder, Togbe Afede XIV, who is also the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and the former President of the National House of Chiefs, it was announced that the school is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
