New Accra Airport T3 Car Park Project Starts | The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) will relocate the Terminal 3 Car Park at the Accra International Airport from Monday, 20 July 2026, to allow construction of a new seven-storey multi-purpose car park and airport hotel complex.
GACL announced the relocation in a public notice issued on 16 July 2026, explaining that the existing Terminal 3 parking area will close to airport users and stakeholders during the construction period.
To maintain parking services, GACL has completed the Terminal 3 Car Park Annex, which can accommodate more than 600 vehicles. The new facility will serve passengers, visitors and other airport users throughout the transition period.
GACL has also deployed parking attendants to assist drivers and guide them through the new parking arrangements. The company encouraged all airport users to follow directions and cooperate with officials during the relocation process.
The planned seven-storey multi-purpose car park and airport hotel complex will add more capacity and improve convenience for travellers using Terminal 3. The development reflects GACL’s broader strategy to modernise airport infrastructure and support growing passenger traffic.
GACL appealed to passengers, stakeholders and visitors for their understanding and cooperation as the relocation takes effect.
The company assured airport users that it will continue to provide support and guidance to ensure a smooth transition during the construction period.
Funding for ongoing upgrades
The new T3 car park project is to be funded by the Airport Infrastructure Development Charge (AIDC). The AIDC, which took effect on April 1, 2026, is expected to generate approximately $800 million over a 10-year period to finance critical aviation infrastructure.
Under the approved framework, international passengers are charged US$50 per trip. Travelers within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) pay US$15 per trip, while other African routes cost US$30 per trip. The Ministry of Transport holds these funds.
The new T3 car park, when completed, will be a seven-story car park with 2,000 parking bays. Beyond parking infrastructure, the expansion includes a 4,000 square metre retail complex featuring shopping outlets and restaurants, as well as a sky-view lounge designed to enhance the airport experience for both passengers and visitors.
A major highlight of the project is the development of a two-tier airport hotel facility, comprising a 250-room budget hotel and a 120-room luxury hotel. The facility is expected to cater to transit passengers, including those on long layovers or disrupted flights, while also supporting Ghana’s growing role as a connecting hub.
Additionally, a conference centre and business facilities are planned to attract corporate travellers and position the airport as a multi-functional aviation and commercial hub.
The integrated approach, combining infrastructure, hospitality, and retail, signals a deliberate shift toward capturing high-value transit traffic, a key driver of airport competitiveness globally.
