Passengers Call for Faster, Smarter, and Greener Air Travel – SITA Report | By Dominick Andoh| Passengers around the world are demanding a faster, smarter, and more sustainable air travel experience, according to the SITA Passenger IT Insights 2025 report.
The global survey of more than 7,500 passengers across 25 countries reveals a widening gap between travelers’ digital-first lifestyles and the aviation industry’s pace of transformation.
The findings show that two in three passengers want faster airport processing and 42% would prefer a single ticket that covers their entire journey — air, rail, and road. Mobile engagement has surged by 20 percentage points since 2020, with passengers increasingly managing their journeys from their smartphones.
“Passengers aren’t resisting change. They’ve already changed,” said David Lavorel, CEO of SITA. “They’ve gone digital. Now it’s our turn. The future of travel isn’t just about adding tech. It’s about removing friction.”
The report highlights the growing acceptance of biometrics and digital IDs, once considered futuristic but now widely expected. Nearly 80% of passengers are ready to store their passport digitally, and two-thirds would pay for that convenience. Digital identity usage is projected to soar from 155 million users today to 1.27 billion by 2029.
Sustainability also emerged as a top priority, with almost 90% of travelers saying they would pay more to reduce their carbon footprint. Many are willing to fly slower or pack lighter to help cut emissions, but they expect the aviation industry to show equal commitment.
Trust, the report found, remains a decisive factor in travel choices. Although baggage mishandling is at historic lows, 78% of passengers would pay for end-to-end baggage tracking to ensure peace of mind.
“We’re asking passengers to adapt to travel,” Lavorel added. “But they’re asking travel to adapt to them.”
