Riyadh Air Plans Direct Flights to Accra | By Dominick Andoh | Accra, May 26, 2025 | Saudi Arabia’s new national carrier, Riyadh Air, plans to commence direct flights to Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, marking a significant milestone in air connectivity between the two nations.
Though the official start date is yet to be disclosed, Riyadh Air has formally communicated its intention to operate the Accra route to Ghana’s Ministry of Transport through diplomatic channels. The airline is currently working to meet all regulatory and legal requirements necessary to begin operations, AviationGhana sources have confirmed.
This move will establish the first-ever scheduled direct flight between Ghana and Saudi Arabia, providing a much-needed alternative to the current travel options that require stopovers in third countries.
Until now, Ghanaian pilgrims travelling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Hajj have largely relied on seasonal charter services operated by Jakarta-based Lion Air. Those travelling outside the pilgrimage season or for business have had to depend on connecting flights via Emirates, Ethiopian or Qatar Airways.
The introduction of direct flights by Riyadh Air is expected to deliver significant benefits. It will enhance travel convenience, reduce total travel time, and lower costs for passengers commuting between the two countries. The direct link also has the potential to boost bilateral trade, tourism, and investment, building on the long-standing cordial diplomatic relations between Ghana and Saudi Arabia.
Industry observers note that this development aligns with Riyadh Air’s aggressive expansion strategy and Ghana’s ambition to become a leading aviation hub in West Africa. With a fleet of 132 aircraft, Riyadh Air plans to serve over 100 global destinations by 2030.
More details, including route schedules and ticketing information, are expected much later as regulatory processes advance. Riyadh Air’s entry into the Ghanaian market is seen as a strategic move that could reshape Middle East-West Africa air connectivity.
