United Airlines Accelerates Fleet Expansion With 250 New Aircraft | By Joojo Maapa

United Airlines has announced an aggressive fleet expansion plan that will see the carrier take delivery of more than 250 new aircraft by April 2028, marking one of the largest two-year aircraft intake programmes in global aviation.

The expansion forms part of the airline’s long-term growth strategy aimed at modernising its fleet, enhancing onboard products, and strengthening its position as a premium global carrier. The new aircraft will introduce upgraded cabin experiences, increase premium seating capacity, and replace older, less fuel-efficient jets.

“For more than a decade, we’ve invested billions of dollars in our product, service, and technology as part of our plan to be the best brand loyal airline in the world, and the result is that more and more customers are choosing to fly us every day,” said United CEO Scott Kirby. “Today we accelerate our plans and elevate our offerings to the next level, creating an even more consistent, premium onboard experience for every customer and delivering value across every cabin of service.”

United Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella, noted that: “These new planes and products not only complement our fleet and network plans, but they also give our customers more premium amenities and seat choices – whether they bought a basic economy ticket to fly from Chicago to Ft. Wayne or are flying Polaris between San Francisco and Singapore. United is setting the pace and innovating for our customers at a scope and scale unheard of in aviation history – and we’re not taking our foot off the gas.”

A key component of the plan is the introduction of new narrowbody aircraft with widebody-style amenities. The airline’s Airbus A321 “Coastliner” subfleet and A321XLR aircraft will feature the United Polaris business class product, including lie-flat seats with all-aisle access—marking the first time such offerings will be available on select domestic transcontinental routes.

United plans to induct 100 of these aircraft, replacing up to 40 ageing Boeing 757 jets. The Coastliner aircraft will operate on premium routes linking San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York/Newark.

The fleet expansion also includes significant widebody growth, with 47 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft set to join the fleet, many configured with additional premium seating. These aircraft will feature enhanced cabin interiors, including larger business class suites and upgraded in-flight technology.

In addition, United will take delivery of 119 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, alongside Airbus A321neo and A321XLR variants, further strengthening its short- and medium-haul network.

The airline is also introducing a redesigned regional jet, the CRJ450, aimed at improving connectivity between smaller cities and major hubs such as Denver and Chicago.

United executives say the expansion builds on its “United Next” strategy launched in 2021, which has already seen significant fleet renewal and increased premium seating capacity across its network.
