Ghana introduces Chip-embedded passports | Ghana has introduced chip-embedded passports with enhanced biometric features and is expected to gradually phase out the current biometric passport.
The chip-embedded passports are linked to the national identification system. The biometric information on the chip can be used to authenticate the identity of the passport holder.
The newly launched e-passport for Ghanaian citizens incorporates advanced security features, including anti-fraud technologies with latent and patent indicators. This chip-embedded passport serves as an upgrade to the existing biometric version.
The e-passport’s design reflects Ghana’s cultural heritage, featuring Adinkra symbols such as Freedom and Independence, and Democracy and Cooperation.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo noted that the e-passport is a symbol of the nation’s progress and resilience. He noted that it supports Ghanaians in accessing education, business opportunities, and family connections abroad. The improvements aim to address inefficiencies and combat passport-related scams. The evolution of the passport from handwritten documents to biometric versions demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to global standards.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey highlighted the government’s dedication to efficiency and international standards in launching the e-passport. The ministry initiated the project in 2016 in partnership with Biometric Travel Solutions Limited (BTS).
